This sequence of photos demonstrates the rather dramatic impact of color quality improvement that results when high pressure sodium systems are replaced with energy-saving advanced metal halide. The photos were taken midway through the project for the purpose of comparison. The importance of projecting a sense of security and cleanliness in public transportation facilities is obvious, and these photos graphically depict the role that color quality plays in shaping those impressions. Even at extremely high light levels, high pressure sodium appears dingy and dangerous. Color-coded communications (signage, warning signals, etc...) aren't nearly as effective and research has shown that lumen for lumen, white light appears brighter.
